Born in Malmkoping, a small town two hours west of Stockholm, Sweden, Carina Jonsson has been designing and sewing since she was a small girl making clothes for her Barbie dolls. Taught by her mother in the Swedish tradition, Carina learned needlework, loom weaving, lace working, knitting, fabric dyeing and leather crafting at home at a young age. She went on to obtain a degree in textiles at the Rinman school of Textiles near Stockholm before coming to the United States in 1982. During the past 25 years, Carina studied at the Fashion Institute of Technology ( New York City ) while developing a following for her work as a seamstress and home decorator in New Jersey and Metropolitan Washington DC area. Today, she designs and manufactures textiles, clothing and accessories in her studio in Bethesda, MD.
SEWphisticated was started in 1994, with lines of children'd clothing for retail sales. Today, the company is mainly a wholesale business but will also provide some lines retail. SEWphisticated also provide with material kits or custom tailoring of the Swedish National Costume.
